'Braque's prints are
striking and impressive. They testify to his willingness to push
the techniques of printmaking to their limits in order to express
his concerns as a painter. He said of lithography, I set out
to do something new with it... I made it almost like painting, rather
than trying to produce simple touched-up drawings, as was traditional.
To this end he focused above all on colour in his lithographs. The
rich but sombre greys, browns and blacks, offset by touches of lemon-yellow
and reddish brown, of his early prints were followed later by intense,
sometimes startling contrasts of brighter hues, associated more
often with Pop Art.
To his etchings Braque
brought a very individual concern with surface texture: he bit his
plates deeply to produce strong relief effects, and also experimented
with varnish. In all his graphic work Braque seems to have relished
the creative potential of printmaking technology, working through
state after state of a particular print, and trying out different
combinations of shapes and colours. It is not the finished product
that is interesting, he once wrote in his notebooks, so
much as the means of achieving it.'
